  • Every year, families across South Carolina wait anxiously for parole hearings that could determine whether their loved ones are given a second chance at life outside prison walls. These decisions impact not only inmates, but children, spouses, parents, communities, taxpayers, and the future of rehabilitation itself.

  • Yet despite the enormous power held by the South Carolina Parole Board, many citizens are left asking a critical question: Where is the accountability?

  • A System Built on Discretion, Not Transparency
  • The South Carolina parole system grants significant autonomy to the parole board. Board members possess the authority to decide whether an inmate remains incarcerated or is allowed an opportunity to reenter society. While discretion is necessary in any justice system, unchecked discretion without clear, measurable standards creates serious concerns about fairness and consistency. For many inmates and families, the parole process feels unpredictable and subjective. Individuals who complete educational programs, maintain clean disciplinary records, participate in rehabilitation efforts, and demonstrate years of personal growth are still frequently denied parole without meaningful explanation.

  • This leaves many wondering:
  • What standards are actually being used?
  • How is rehabilitation being measured?
  • What qualifies someone as “ready” for release?
  • Are decisions consistent across cases?
  • Is there meaningful oversight of the board’s decisions?

  • Without transparency, public trust begins to erode.
